How to create a Minecraft server on Windows

A practical guide to setting up your own server at home and managing it without hassle.

1. What you need

A Windows 10 or 11 computer you can leave on while you play, enough RAM for the server and a stable Internet connection.

A Minecraft (Java Edition) account to play, and the server files for the version you want to run. Xukium is designed to handle the technical side of managing those servers.

2. Choose the server type and version

Servers come in several types: vanilla (the official one) and variants such as Paper, aimed at performance and plugins. The server version must match the game version your friends will connect with.

If you plan to use mods or plugins, decide the server type first: not every mod works on every type.

3. Create and configure the server in Xukium

Install Xukium, sign in and click “New server”. Enter a name, the version and the type, and adjust the main options from the interface. Each server uses its own port (by default, 25565 for the first one).

Review the settings calmly: difficulty, player count, game mode and world seed can be set from forms.

4. Start the server and check that it works

Start the server from Xukium and wait for it to finish booting. From your own computer you can connect using the address “localhost”. If something goes wrong, check the console and the server properties.

5. Invite your friends

For people to connect from outside your network you have two options: open (forward) the server port on your router and share your public IP, or use a tunnel. With Xukium Plus you can use the playit.gg integration, which in many cases avoids touching the router.

Share the address only with people you trust and use the whitelist to control who can join.

6. Protect your progress

Make backups before updating versions or installing mods. With Free you can create manual backups; with Plus, schedule and restore them.
